Araucana

Originally hailing from South America, the dual purpose Araucanas are a rare breed weighing up to four or five pounds. They are famous for their blue-shelled eggs, which are medium in size. This breed is also hardy in winter, tolerates confinement, and broody.

Araucanas are exceptionally hard to breed, and true Araucanas are best obtained from breeders, rather than hatcheries, who are know to sell a different breed called Easter Eggers, and pass them off as Araucanas.
