The Australorp is, as its name suggests, from Australia. Famous for their egg production, Australorps can lay roughly 250 light brown eggs a year. The breed is known to be friendly, and many are attracted to its black plumage which displays hints of green and purple in bright light. This is a heavy breed, at seven to eight pounds, which makes it not only a great egg layer, but a great breed for meat.
Hardy in winter, broody, and rather friendly and docile, the Australorp makes a great first breed for newcomers to chicken keeping that we highly recommend.
